Israel will strike Iran without warning US - intelligence source

Israeli officials say if they decide to launch a pre-emptive attack on Iranian nuclear facilities, they will do so without the prior consent or knowledge of the US, according to an AP report citing leaked US intelligence.

The message was conveyed by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Ehud Barak to a number of senior US officials visiting the country, the news agency said, citing a US intelligence source. The official spoke about the sensitive strategic negotiations on condition of anonymity. Both the US and Israel declined to make any official comment.

Tel Aviv insists its strategy is necessary in order to protect Washington from being blamed for failing to stop an Israeli attack, should it take place. But it may also signify Israeli frustration over America’s position on the conflict.

America has told its Middle Eastern ally that it will neither take military action against Iran nor back unilateral action on the part of Israel. Washington favors sanctions over brute force as a means to stop Iran’s controversial nuclear program.

The news of Israel’s unilateral intentions comes ahead of a key visit to the US by Netanyahu, planned for early March. The Israeli premier reportedly ordered his ministers not to publicly discuss the Iranian nuclear program in an apparent damage limitation move ahead of his trip. The report of the “gagging order” came a day after Defense Minister Barak gave a lengthy TV interview in which he spoke of the danger posed by Iran.

Western countries and Israel are convinced that Iran’s uranium enrichment program is aimed at developing nuclear weapons capability. Israel is determined not to allow this to happen. Iran insists that its nuclear pursuits are purely civilian.

Tensions rose again last week after a leaked UN nuclear watchdog report stated “serious concerns regarding possible military dimensions to Iran’s nuclear program.”

In the latest bid to halt the enrichment, the US and EU issued sanctions against Iran’s oil industry. However they failed to rally all major buyers of Iranian oil to their banner. Tehran remains adamant that the move will not divert it from its nuclear research.

Bankrupt Britain runs out of money..!!

Britain’s Chancellor George Osborne acknowledges that the country has run out of the much-needed money and cannot afford debt-fuelled tax cuts or extra spending.

The Chancellor made the stark warning ahead of next month’s budget, noting that “there was little the coalition government could do to stimulate the economy”, British media reported.

“The British government has run out of money because all the money was spent in the good years,” the Chancellor said adding “the money and the investment and the jobs need to come from the private sector.”

Osborne’s bleak assessment echoes that of Liam Byrne, the former chief secretary to the Treasury, who bluntly joked that Labour had left Britain broke when he exited the government in 2010.

Osborne is under severe pressure to boost growth, amid signs the economy is slipping back into a recession.

The Institute of Fiscal Studies has urged him to consider emergency tax cuts in the budget to reduce the risk of a prolonged economic slump.

But, the Chancellor has said he would stand firm on his effort to balance the books by refusing to borrow money.

“Any tax cut would have to be paid for,” Osborne said. “In other words there would have to be a tax rise somewhere else or a spending reduction.

“In other words what we are not going to do in this Budget is borrow more money to either increase spending or cut taxes”, added Osborne.

The Chancellor’s tough words were echoed by Liberal Democrat Jeremy Browne, the foreign minister, who warned that Britain faced “accelerated decline” without measures to tackle its debt and increase competitiveness.

“Britain’s market share in the world used to be dominant but was now in freefall compared with the soaring economies of Asia and South America. This situation has been becoming more acute for years.

It is now staring us in the face. So we need to take action”, he wrote in an article published by The Daily Telegraph.

Most Syrians voted for new constitution: Minister

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his wife, Asma, cast their ballot in the capital, February 26, 2012.

Almost 90 percent of Syrian voters have said 'yes' to the country’s new constitution, says Interior Minister Mohammad Ibrahim al-Shaar.

According to the Syrian minister, nearly 60 percent of eligible voters took part in the referendum on Sunday, with 7,490,319 (89.4 percent) supporting it and 753,208 (9 percent) saying "No."

The new constitution will end five decades of Ba'ath party rule by allowing political pluralism, it will also enact a presidential limit of two seven-year terms.

Article 23 of the new constitution guarantees the women’s rights to participate in the social, economic, and political activities, while Article 42 states that citizens have the right to express their thoughts freely and to hold peaceful demonstrations.

Damascus has pledged multi-party parliamentary elections within three months.

The new constitution is part of the reforms plans promised by President Bashar al-Assad.

The referendum came after a year of deadly violence in the country.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since mid-March 2011. The violence has claimed the lives of hundreds, reportedly including over 2,000 security forces.

Damascus blames ‘outlaws, saboteurs, and armed terrorist groups’ for the unrest, asserting that it is being orchestrated from abroad.

Putin accuses West of seeking ‘regime change’ in Iran

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has accused the Western powers of trying to topple the Iranian government under the cover of fighting nuclear proliferation.

"Under the guise of trying to prevent the spread of weapons of mass destruction... they (Western powers) are attempting something else entirely and setting different goals -- regime change," Putin said on Friday.

He reiterated that Moscow is taking a different stance from what the West is trying to impose on it.

"We have such suspicions," the Russian premier said, adding, "And we are trying to take a stand that differs from the one they are trying to force on us” about Iran’s nuclear issue.

Putin's comments come as the latest US intelligence report on Iran's nuclear energy program has confirmed its peaceful nature.

The Los Angeles Times said on Thursday that a consensus report by 16 US intelligence agencies shows Iran has not tried to build any nuclear weapons and that there has been no diversion in its atomic energy program.

The United States, Israel and some of their allies accuse Tehran of pursuing military objectives in its nuclear program and have used this pretext to push for four rounds of UN sanctions and a series of unilateral sanctions against the Islamic Republic.

Iran has refuted the allegations, arguing that as a signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), it has the right to use nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.

Tel Aviv and Washington have also recently ramped up their war rhetoric, threatening Iran with military strikes in case the US-engineered sanctions against the country fail to force Tehran into abandoning its civilian nuclear program.

Iranian officials have promised a crushing response to any military strike against the country, warning that any such measure could result in a war that would spread beyond the Middle East.

Iran’s oil cut haunts UK petrol pumps

Iran’s oil embargo on Britain has already driven price of petrol and diesel to an all-time high while the British foreign secretary denies any impact on Britain’s energy security.

The Daily Mail reported on Tuesday that the price of diesel rose to 143.16p per liter while the price of crude oil continues to soar following Iran’s decision to stop oil exports to British and French companies.

The news about the hike in pump prices came as informal reports by local residents said the price of diesel soared to £1.46 or even £1.47 in some rural areas in the UK.

Moreover, as the price of oil continues to rise, industry analysts in Britain have predicted that hikes in the price of petrol could be as much as 7p per liter.

“The rule of thumb used to be that a $2 rise in the price of a barrel of oil added 1p a liter to pump prices,” said a spokesman for AA, which provides British motorists with advice.

This comes as Brent crude was traded at over $123 per barrel on Thursday and the world’s largest oil trader, Vitol, forecast that the price of crude oil would soar to over $150 per barrel.

Furthermore, AA reported that the price of unleaded petrol in Britain has risen by 1.5p per liter to over £1.35.

The all time hikes in the pump prices come as the British foreign secretary William Hague insisted that Iran’s oil embargo on Britain would leave “no impact on Britain’s energy security.”

Iran’s opportune decision to cut oil to France and Britain delivered the two countries a blow as they were not yet prepared for arranging alternative sources to replace Iran’s oil.

“They’ve [Iranians] decided to impose their own embargo boycott on the offending powers. And they’re starting with the two biggest imperialist bullies on the schoolyard, the British and the French, who are now so weak that they can only act together. They are a kind of an imperialist bicycle built for two. So, they get slammed first. They haven’t had time to carefully arrange the fallback options and the alternative sources of oil,” said American journalist and historian Webster Griffin Tarpley in an interview with Russia’s English-language news channel, Russia Today.

UN, Arab League name Annan as special envoy on Syria unrest

Former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan

The United Nations and the Arab League have appointed former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan as the special envoy on the nearly-one-year-old unrest in Syria.

The two bodies said in a Thursday statement that they were ‘grateful to Mr. Annan for accepting this important mission at a critical time for the people of Syria.’

Annan "will consult broadly and engage with all relevant interlocutors within and outside Syria in order to end the violence," said the statement.

A deputy envoy is soon to be named from the Arab region, according to the statement.

The Ghanaian served two terms as the UN chief from 1997 through 2006. He was called in as a mediator to end deadly unrest in Kenya in 2008.

Annan will now act under a mandate set out by a UN General Assembly resolution passed last week and the Arab League resolutions on Syria.

The West and the Syrian opposition, however, accuse the government of killing protesters.

China boycotts Syria meeting in new snub to West

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei says his country will not participate in so-called 'Friends of Syria' conference, which is expected to gather several western nations and international groups in Tunisia.

Hong said China is not prepared to attend the conference as it needs to further study the aim, effect and mechanism of the conference, and has no idea of the preparations of the meeting.

He added that China is a friend of the Syrian and Arab nations.

“China supports all efforts that are conducive to peacefully and properly resolving the Syrian issue," Hong said.

The senior Chinese official pointed out that China hopes to work with all concerned parties to play a positive and constructive role in the process of settling the Syrian crisis.

China believes that any action taken by the international community should help end tensions, boost political dialogues, resolve differences and maintain peace and stability in the Middle East, Hong said.

'Friends of Syria' conference is to be held in the Tunisian capital Tunis on Friday.

Meanwhile, Russia has announced that it would not take part in the conference.

Deputy Russian Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov on February 22 described the absence of Syrian officials at the 'Friends of Syria' conference as a big blunder by its organizers.

“Concerning the meeting, we have several questions, especially the composition of invitees. We paid the attention to the fact that there are no representatives of the Syrian government among them. In short, the organizers are planning to discuss issues related to Syria’s serious crisis without the involvement of one of its main players, the Syrian authorities,” Gatilov said.

“Secondly, on the eve of the meeting, the Western and Arab countries are supposed to meet separately. Supposedly, they will determine the character of discussion at the meeting in Tunisia and even will draft a final document. Russia believes that such an approach is completely unacceptable," he noted.

“We consider it is incorrect to adopt or draft documents on such an important issue without the involvement of key players of the Syrian crisis. Consequently, we consider that it’s impossible for Russia to take part in the meeting in Tunisia. We have informed our decision to its organizers,” Gatilov concluded.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since mid-March last year.

While the West and the Syrian opposition accuse the government of the killings, Damascus blames ''outlaws, saboteurs and armed terrorist groups'' for the unrest that erupted in mid-March, insisting that it is being orchestrated from abroad.

In interviews with Israeli news outlets over the past few months, the Syrian armed rebels have clearly expressed their vision for the future of Syria and their interest in establishing relations with the Tel Aviv regime.

However, Syrian people have repeatedly expressed solidarity with the government.

Iran war fear to set oil market on fire: US energy experts

Fear over the closure of the Strait of Hormuz was the biggest reason why gasoline prices in the US hit an all-time January high in the first month of 2012.

US energy experts say the escalation of tensions between the United States and Iran will prompt a rise in the price of gasoline in the US, stating that a primary 30-cent increase per gallon will be just a beginning for further price hikes.

Gasoline prices have already increased by more than 10 percent over the last two months, following the increase in global oil prices, according to a report published on the CNN website said on Thursday.

According to the report, several factors, including supply disruptions in a number of oil producing nations, have caused the prices of the energy source to rise, leading in return to a similar increase in the prices of such oil byproducts as gasoline.

“But the biggest factor [behind the oil price upsurge] by far, say analysts, is fear that tensions with Iran will lead to an all-out war that causes a disruption in oil supplies,” the report said.

"The market right now is fairly well supplied, but you've just got a significant fear factor that things could get worse," said John Kingston, the director of the oil department at Platts energy analysis institute.

The expert said the fear is that Iran's 2.2 million barrels a day in crude exports could be cut off.

Other experts maintain that a worse fear is over the possibility that the 17 million barrels a day that flow through the Strait of Hormuz and account for one-fifth of the world's total production could be disrupted in case of a war.

The AAA Energy Service Company has reported that fear over the closure of the Strait of Hormuz was the biggest reason why gasoline prices in the US hit an all-time January high in the first month of 2012.

"It's a market that's caught fire. And it doesn't look like there's any circuit breakers to stop it," said Ben Brockwell, an analyst at the Oil Price Information Service, which collects data for the AAA.

Unless the situation with Iran cools off, he added, and future prices decline, consumers will likely see the 35-cent-a-gallon difference in the form of a similarly paired price hike at the pump in a matter of weeks.

Israeli officials have recently ramped up their war rhetoric against Iran, threatening the Islamic Republic with military strikes in case the US-engineered sanctions against the country fail to force Tehran into abandoning its civilian nuclear program.

The United States, Israel and some of their allies accuse Tehran of pursuing military objectives in its nuclear program.

Iran refutes the Western allegations, and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has never found any evidence indicating that Tehran's civilian nuclear program has been diverted towards nuclear weapons production.

Vahidi: Israel threats against Iran ridiculous

Iran's Defense Minister Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi

Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi has severely criticized Israeli military threats against Iran over its peaceful nuclear program, saying such saber-rattling is “ridiculous.”

“Zionists make a lot of noise and rhetorically threaten to take military action against Iran but these remarks are ridiculous,” Vahidi said during an address to an international conference in Tehran, held on Thursday to commemorate the martyred commanders in the Islamic world.

“The Zionist regime is on the verge of dissolution and undoubtedly its [potential military] action against the Islamic Republic of Iran will certainly lead to the disintegration of the occupying regime,” the Iranian defense minister added.

The comments come as Israeli officials have recently ramped up their war rhetoric against Iran over its peaceful nuclear activities.

On February 2, Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak warned that if the Western sanctions imposed against Tehran fail to stop its nuclear program, military action against the country must be put on agenda.

Meanwhile, Israeli President Shimon Peres has reportedly called on Israeli officials to halt their recently intensified war rhetoric against Iran, describing such anti-Iran remarks as unnecessary warmongering.

Peres told the Israeli officials that there is no point in the "unceasing self-intimidation," and that Israel should leave “the Iran issue to the superpowers, first and foremost the United States,” the Israeli daily Haaretz reported on Thursday.

The report also said that Peres is expected to tell US President Barack Obama in an upcoming meeting that he (Peres) does not believe Israel should attack Iran in the near future.

On February 5, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu similarly warned ministers from his center-right Likud political party to avoid making statements on a possible military attack against Iran, saying such remarks could be damaging to Israel.

"The chatter causes extensive damage, puts Israel on the frontline and impedes the sanction efforts," Netanyahu said during a Likud ministerial meeting in East al-Quds (Jerusalem).

The United States, Israel, and some of their allies accuse Tehran of pursuing military objectives in its nuclear program. Washington and Tel Aviv have repeatedly threatened Tehran with the "option" of a military strike against its nuclear facilities.

Iran argues that as a signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency, it has every right to develop and acquire nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.

Iranian officials have promised a crushing response to any military strike against the country, warning that any such measure could result in a war that would spread beyond the Middle East.

US soldier Bradley Manning charged with ‘aiding the enemy’

US Army Private First Class Bradley Manning (C), surrounded by US military, leaves a US military Magistrate Court facility during an Article 32 hearing at Fort Meade, Maryland on December 19, 2011.

Former US Army intelligence analyst Bradley Manning has been formally charged with involvement in the largest leak of classified information in American history.

A military court at Fort Meade, Maryland, on Thursday charged Manning with 22 counts, the most serious of which is "aiding the enemy."

The charge is an offense that could bring the death penalty, but the prosecution has said it intends to seek a maximum of life in prison for Manning.

Manning, however, deferred entering a plea. He also declined to say whether he preferred to be tried before a single military judge or a military jury.

Manning's civilian lawyer, David E. Coombs, said he would be ready to begin the full trial in April. Prosecutors asked for the trial to be scheduled for early August.

The 24-year-old is accused of passing hundreds of thousands of military field reports from Iraq and Afghanistan and US diplomatic cables to WikiLeaks between November 2009 and May 2010, when he was serving in Iraq.

The leak of the military documents shed light on civilian deaths, while the diplomatic cables sparked a firestorm by disclosing the private remarks of heads of state and candid observations by senior US officials.

The Bradley Manning Support Group described his prosecution as "fundamentally unjust.”

Manning’ supporters also say the conditions of Manning’s pre-trial confinement have been orchestrated by the government to compel him to testify against WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange. A grand jury has been convened in Alexandria, Va., to hear evidence against Assange.

"They seem to be bludgeoning Bradley Manning to accept a plea where he would then implicate Julian Assange," said Michael Ratner, president of the Center for Constitutional Rights, a nonprofit legal organization based in New York City.

Massive $10mn Pink Diamond Found in Australia

Australia's biggest pink rough diamond has been discovered at Rio Tinto's Argyle mine, the world's largest producer of rare pink diamonds, and is to be cut and polished as a single stone.

The diamond will be cut and polished by the company's expert diamond cutter Richard How Kim Kam, media reports said.

The 12.76 carat gem, which will be known as the Argyle Pink Jubilee, was unearthed at the Argyle open pit in the east Kimberley region of Western Australia, reported Xinhua.

"I'm going to take it very carefully," How Kim Kam told the Australian Associated Press (AAP).

"I know the world will be watching," he said.

The finished gem will be graded by a team of international experts and shown around the world before being sold under a tender process later in 2012.

Argyle Pink Diamonds manager Josephine Johnson said a diamond of its level was extraordinary.

"It has taken 26 years of Argyle production to unearth this stone and we may never see one like this again," Johnson said.

Innovative Tips to Discipline Your Child

In the absence of a universal parenting handbook, parents often devise their own ways of disciplining children. Although it can be quite a task for parents, doing it the right way is even more challenging. While parents mostly resort to easier weapons such as screaming, slapping and telling them to do things a certain way, there are more ways than one to get the point across.

Recently, the UK-based theatre company London Talents staged a performance in Mumbai addressing parents and teachers on how to make their children understand that sharing and caring are essential. Jumana Kapadia, director of London Talents, shares a few tips on how to role play to discipline kids.

Role play

Children have feelings and instinctive self-esteem. If you tell your child that he’s selfish for not sharing his toy, and punish him by forcing him to hand it over to another child, you’ll foster resentment, not generosity. Kapadia says, “To encourage sharing, use positive reinforcement rather than admonishment. Keep in mind that it’s okay for your child to hold back for some time and he does not have to hand over his things at that very moment.

Acknowledge to your child that it is, or can be hard to share. “Instead of scolding or pulling it away from him to give his toy over, empathise with him/her. Tell them, ‘I know it can be hard to share and your toy is very special to you, but you know your friend feels sad when you let him play with your toys and I am sure your intention is not to make your friend sad’” says Kapadia. For instance, if your child is used to sitting at one corner of the table most of the time, he/she seems to be taking ownership of it. Instead of asking them to get up and move, encourage them to be a character that they can associate with. This will boost their egos and self esteem. “Tell the little girl that she’s a queen and that she should share her throne with others. This gives each child a feeling that they are important and that they are getting respect.”

Feelings into words

Help your pre-schooler put their feelings into words. When they’re not being generous, ask what’s wrong. Kapadia provides a reference to the recent show. “For instance, there’s a story where the girl did not want to give her boxes away to the boy. That’s because each of her boxes had a specific purpose in the story. Some were hillsides, some were goats, one a river and the other a troll,” she says. “To an adult these boxes may all look the same, but to the child each box has been invested in and is needed for the role they have given it. She has to learn to adapt her game to the situation. The situation is that her friend needs more boxes to build his bridge. Eventually, they help each other, share the boxes, build a magical bridge and they are rewarded with their own special troll and a goat box.”

Use hand puppetry

If your child is thoroughly possessive about a toy that his playmate wants, chances are he’s thinking, “It’s either him or me”. The concept of sharing the toy may not even have occurred to him. Encourage the child to tell a story using the toy. Kapadia says, “Ask the children to use their hands as puppets. Give each hand a character. Now ask the children to re-enact the story making the toy part of the story. For example, if they have building blocks, build a truck, use one hand as the driver and the other as its friend, and drive the truck to the child’s friend.” Once the blocks have reached the friend, chances are that the child may demand to have them back. Kapadia says, “Accept that a child’s patience level is lesser than that of an adult. Tell your child, ‘I know you really want to play with it, while you are being good and waiting, can I help you find something else to do?” Such a statement makes the child feel supported and understood, not abandoned. When this strategy is used, children are often happy to wait longer.

Explore their imagination

Kids running away from mathematical problems are fairly common. So if they have received a worksheet on simple addition and subtraction and are finding it tedious to work it out involve their toy and build a story around it.

Parents also often face the arduous task of running behind their child with boring healthy food. Presentation of food is your ticket to freedom. To tackle a fussy eater, present the food in a fun manner — create a hat out of a sandwich, introduce bitter gourd and chappati as a smiley face. Try eating with your child and build stories around food, sharing ideas. So a morsel of sabzi-roti can transform from a dinosaur to a rocket to sand to anything while it’s on its way to your child’s mouth. “While eating dal-roti, treat the dal like a river and the roti as a boat, so the child will have to dip the roti into the dal for each bite and treat it like play,” she explains.

Brushing teeth can be fun

If your mornings are spent convincing the little one to brush its teeth, change their perception. Kapadia says, “If your child enjoys eating pizza, tell them that their mouth is a pizza base and the tooth paste is a sauce, and by brushing he/she’ll be pulling out the toppings. Ask them to explain the taste. By making the conversation light and fun for them, you’ll turn a difficult chore into a fun habit.”

Health Benefits of Green Tea

Popular in Asia for more than 5,000 years, green tea is quickly becoming a health drink around the world. Green tea was first introduced to the west by Turkish traders in the 6th century. All green tea is made from the leaves of the Camellia sinesis plant.

Green tea's health benefits are said to come from its high levels ofantioxidants. Research has shown that antioxidants help the body to remove damaging free radicals. Because of its caffeine, green tea should be avoided by infants and children. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should drink green tea in limited amounts.

Green Tea for Longevity and Healthy Aging

The most common use of green tea is to help the body age well. The antioxidants in green tea are thought to erase some of the negative effects of aging on the body. Other uses of green tea are also popular, though there is little research to support most of the uses. Remember that the lack of research for these conditions does not diminish the antioxidant benefits of green tea.

Uses of Green Tea With Unclear, Scant or Contradictory Research Results

Uganda to lead AU forces against LRA rebels

African Union forces in Somalia

Uganda will lead the proposed 5,000 African Union (AU) forces that will fight the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) in Central African Republic and DR Congo, Press TV reports.

According to the report, Dick Olum, the commander of Uganda Peoples Defense Force (UPDF) military police, will command the AU force, which will comprise mostly of UPDF, South Sudan, Central African Republic and DR Congo forces.

The UN regional office for Central African Republic said the force will be based at the current UPDF headquarters in Nzara, South Sudan.

The UPDF spokesperson Felix Kulayigye said, “They are waiting for the AU to approve Olum’s appointment and designing the time table of when the Force would be deployed.”

The four countries affected by the LRA agreed to form a force against the rebels.

Uganda State Minister for Defense, Jeje Odong, welcomed the involvement of the international community to fight LRA rebels who have displaced and killed thousands in the four countries.

“Our troops are already present in every site where LRA operates. In due course, we could possibly make their re-organization based on the stakes and needs,” he said.

Uganda now commands two AU military campaigns out of three in Africa. AU mission in Somalia is also commanded by Uganda.

US presses Pakistan to allow intelligence bases near Iran

An Indian newspaper says the United States is putting pressure on Pakistan to allow Washington to establish espionage bases in the country’s Balochistan province to gather intelligence on Iran.

According to a report published by The Times of India on Monday, the US Congress has been discussing a resolution to recognize the right of Baloch people to self-determination as a means of putting pressure on Islamabad to give in to the US demands.

The move elicited angry reactions from Pakistan’s top leaders including Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani who described it as an attack on the country's sovereignty.

Pakistan’s foreign minister, Hina Rabbani Khar, also said though the resolution was an isolated move by a few individuals, it "is contrary to the principles of the UN Charter and international law.”

“The outburst in America for Balochistan…is part of the move [by the US] to set up intelligence bases close to the Iranian border,” an unnamed Pakistani official was quoted by the paper as saying.

The official indicated that the Congressional hearing and resolution were nothing but "pressure tactics."

"They [Americans] want to use our soil against Iran, which we can never allow," he added.

Meanwhile, two officials from Pakistan’s security agencies and one from diplomatic circles confirmed to the daily that the American diplomats and military leaders had requested permission for their agents to operate near the Iranian border in Balochistan.

The revelation came a few days after the US House of Representatives blamed Pakistani security agencies for the abductions and extra-judicial killings in Balochistan.

This is not the first time that the United States has made efforts to spy on Iran.

On May 30, 2011, the members of a CIA espionage and sabotage network were arrested by the Iranian Intelligence Ministry.

On November 24, Iran announced the arrest of a dozen other CIA spies, who were found to have been on a mission to sabotage the country's nuclear facilities and other important compounds.

Another CIA espionage network with 12 members was busted in Iran and Lebanon in cooperation with the Lebanese resistance movement of Hezbollah.

On December 4, Iranian Army's electronic warfare unit downed a US RQ-170 Sentinel stealth aircraft when flying over the northeastern Iran city of Kashmar, some 225 kilometers (140 miles) away from the Afghan border.

Two US officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that the drone had been part of a CIA reconnaissance mission, involving the United State's intelligence community stationed in Afghanistan.

EU oil flow conditional on payment guarantee, long-term deals: Iran

Foreign Ministry spokesman says Iran will only continue exporting oil to the European Union if the member states give a guarantee to pay the price and sign medium- and long-term oil purchase contracts.

After EU foreign ministers decided to ban the import of Iran's oil by member states in their January 23 meeting, Iran said it would cut oil exports to six European countries, including the Netherlands, Spain, Italy, France, Greece and Portugal.

The country officially announced on February 19 that it would sell no more oil to the British and French companies.

Speaking in his weekly briefing on Tuesday, Ramin Mehmanparast said although Iran intends to continue oil trade with the EU states, it now requires those countries to provide guarantee for the payment of the oil price.

“They [EU members] must also sign medium- or long-term contracts covering periods of three to five years [for importing Iran oil] and ban our country's oil customers from unilaterally canceling their contracts,” he added.

The official added that these conditions will guarantee 3-5-year oil cooperation between Iran and Europe and ensure both sides’ interests.

Mehmanparast stated that the EU’s decision to ban Iran oil imports has been illogical and against the mutual interests of Iran and the European Union.

“It seems that the European countries have been forced to make this option [banning Iran oil imports] under political pressures from the US and the Zionist regime [of Israel], but this pressure will actually affect the European people and companies, putting them in dire conditions,” he said.

The spokesman said the approach taken by the UK and France toward Iran has been more hostile than that of other EU members and this is why Iran has started with London and Paris when cutting oil imports to Europe.

“They must know that our country is in a position which must be talked to and treated on equal standing and through mutual respect, and they must forget about their past empires and exploiting other countries,” he said.

Ans : No.

Q: Can a person help himself during a heart attack (Because we see a lot
of forwarded emails on this)?
Ans : Yes. Lie down comfortably and put an aspirin tablet of any description
under the tongue and ask someone to take you to the nearest coronary care
unit without any delay and do not wait for the ambulance since most of the
time, the ambulance does not turn up.

Q: Do, in any way, low white blood cells and low hemoglobin count lead
to heart problems?
Ans : No. But it is ideal to have normal hemoglobin level to increase your
exercise capacity.

Q: Sometimes, due to the hectic schedule we are not able to exercise.
So, does walking while doing daily chores at home or climbing the stairs in

A parent’s obvious preference of one child over another can provoke sibling rivalry and resentment as siblings compete for their parents’ attention

A parent’s obvious preference of one child over another can provoke sibling rivalry and resentment as siblings compete for their parents’ attention, says developmental psychology professor Beth Kelley.

Whether it’s because of intelligence, charisma or physical attractiveness, it’s no secret that some parents favour one child over another.

If you have siblings, you’ve likely witnessed the undeniable favouritism seen in families and perhaps even been a preferred child yourself.

However, a parent’s clear and systematic preference of one child over another can have far-reaching effects.

Mike Levine, ArtSci ’12, said though he hasn’t breached the subject of favouritism with his parents, it’s been a reoccurring theme throughout his life.

His 18-year-old sister Amanda is the favourite because of her musical talents, he said.

“My sister’s a really good opera singer, and I’m not good at literally anything,” he said. “Whenever guests are over they always show videos of her singing or on YouTube … It’s all about her opera talent.”

However, Levine said picking favourites seems natural.

“I think it’s really hard not,” he said. “As a kid, you feel like you favour your dad or your mom, and it’s just as hard with parents as it is as a kid. It’s inevitable.”

A 2005 study from the University of California Davis followed almost 400 families for three years, conducting a total of nine interviews with each set of parents and their children.

After asking them questions and videotaping family interactions, the study concluded that, “65 per cent of mothers and 70 per cent of fathers exhibited a preference for one child, usually the older one.”

Social Darwinism can point to biological reasons for parents’ favoritism. According to a Sept. 22 article in Time Magazine, Time journalist Jeffrey Kluger argues that just like in the animal kingdom, parents are biologically inclined to favour their biggest and healthiest offspring.

These children are seen as the most capable of replicating the family’s genes in future generations.

Queen’s professor of developmental psychology Beth Kelley said parent favouritism can take factors such as physical attractiveness and personality into account.

“There’s research that shows parents pay more attention to their more attractive children, which is kind of scary,” Kelley said. “Parents often bond easier with children who have the same temperament as themselves.”

Favouritism often occurs in families where parents have children from a previous marriage, she said.

“In step families, parents clearly unfavour or favour children. Parents could favour their biological children over step-children even though they try consciously not to,” she said.

Parental favouritism isn’t always intentional.

“Parents adapt their behaviour to what they think meets the child’s needs. Some kids need more supervision, encouragement or structure and rules than others,” she said. “Some kids could misinterpret this as favouring.”

It’s difficult to find an objective way to measure how parents treats their children, because each individual interprets the parent-child relationship differently, Kelley said.

“We see how our parents treat us through the lens of all our experiences and relationships, and how we’ve been treated by our friends and romantic partners,” she said.

Perceived favouritism can provoke sibling rivalry as brothers and sisters compete for their parents’ affection.

In addition, academic achievement is potentially affected by favouritism, Kelly said.

“Certainly the feeling of being loved and valued is related to self esteem and self esteem is related to academic motivation,” she said. “The better your self esteem is, the more empowered you feel to strive to achieve and stick to a difficult task.”

If a child feels favoured by their parents, their other relationships will be affected, Kelley said.

“The relationship one has with their parents and how they feel they’ve been treated is very important,” she said. “Whether you think your parent really loves you and is sensitive to your needs … this is projected on to all your other relationships.

“It’s an internal working model. If you feel your parents didn’t love you as much as your other siblings, you will think other people don’t like you as much as you would like. It’s a self-fulfilling prophecy.”

A study conducted in 2003 by Frank Sulloway at the University of California Berkeley, showed that parental favouritism had a significant effect on personality.

The study found that middle children were less likely than either first-borns or last-borns to report they had been favoured by their parents.

In addition, respondents who said they were favoured by their parents attained higher scores on conscientiousness, and lower scores on openness to experience and neuroticism.

Regardless of perceived favouritism within a household, strong social relationships are built in many ways, Kelley said.

“Parents are not the only people that socialize you,” she said. “Even if you don’t have a great relationship with them, those difficulties can be made up by really good friends, supportive teachers and extended family.”

Kerry Mendelsohn, ArtSci ’13, said she often feels favoured by her parents.

Mendelsohn said she’s typically stronger academically than her brothers.

“When they’re praising you, you feel like you’re favoured in that moment,” she said. “You want to uphold that title almost, I think it’s motivation to succeed and do well.”

Throughout her childhood, Mendelsohn provoked less anger from her parents compared to her two older brothers, she said.

“Being the youngest and being the only girl, I would get yelled at a lot less for similar crimes,” she said. “My dad was a lot rougher when he was mad at the older brothers.”

Favouritism is hard to miss, Mendelsohn said.

“Favouritism is really consolidated and obvious, I think a lot of kids can try too hard to impress their parents, you could feel rejected if you don’t uphold to their standards,” she said.

According to Mendelsohn, both her brothers would disagree that she was the favourite.

“Good parents will make every child feel like they’re the favorite.”

Google turns iPhones into spy phones

Google has been spying on millions of iPhone users around the world, according to a leading newspaper in the United States.

In a special report published on Friday, The Wall Street Journalsaid Google, working together with numerous advertising agencies, placed a special computer code on millions of iPhones that permits the companies to track user behavior.

Google has denied that it monitors the activities of iPhone users and said the imbedded code, or cookies, tracks users and is only made active when users opt-in to one of Google's services, for example Gmail.

However, the company admitted that the code unintentionally allowed additional Google Web advertising cookies to be installed on users' phones without their permission.

Apple's Safari web browser obstructs tracking behavior, but Google's code "tricks" the Safari browser into monitoring iPhone user behavior, the report said.

Stanford University researcher Jonathan Mayer recently discovered the code. Acting on Mayer's advice, a technical advisor to the The Wall Street Journal discovered that the Google tracking code was installed on iPhones by 23 of the top 100 websites.

The code was implanted on advertisements from Fandango.com, Match.com, AOL.com, TMZ.com, UrbanDictionary.com, and a number of other sites.

After the code is installed, Google can follow user movement across a large number of websites.

30 Kenyan civilians killed on Somali border, Al-Shabab main suspects

The Al-Qaeda-allied al-Shabab militant group is suspected of having killed at least 30 Kenyan civilians since Kenya’s government sent troops into southern Somalia to fight against the militants, Press TV reports.

Kenyan police spokesman Eric Kiraithe said on Saturday that the killings are believed to have been carried out by followers of the Somali militant group. He added that most of the attacks were carried out in towns on both sides of the border between the two nations.

Kenya has beefed up security along its border with Somalia since it dispatched soldiers over the border into the conflict-plagued country last October to pursue al-Shabab militants, which it accuses of being behind the kidnapping of several foreigners in its territory. However, al-Shabab has denied involvement in the kidnappings.

Somali President Sheik Sharif Sheik Ahmed said his UN-backed transitional government was opposed to the Kenyan military incursion, which is reportedly being assisted by the United States and France.

Somalia has been without an effective central government since 1991, when warlords overthrew former dictator Mohamed Siad Barre.

The weak Western-backed transitional government in Mogadishu has been battling al-Shabab fighters for the past five years and is propped up by a 10,000-strong African Union force consisting of troops from Uganda, Burundi, and Djibouti.

UK funding violence in DR Congo

British media has once again imposed a news blackout on yet another protest staged by Congolese community in Britain against the Democratic Republic of Congo government and election-related violence occurring in the African nation.

More than one hundred Congolese protesters marched in Whitehall on Thursday, to voice their outrage against the silence of British government and media about Congo "corrupt election" results and mounting humanitarian crises in the country.

While holding anti-UK government banners, the protesters condemned the coalition government and Prime Minister David Cameron for supporting a "genocidal regime". They also shouted against UK’s state-run TV BBC for turning its back on Congolese just because they are black.

“Western injustice in Congo must stop”, “Cameron give DR Congo democracy a chance”, “War and murder in DR Congo all for your laptop and iphone,” the banners read.

Over the past few years, Congo has faced numerous problems such as grinding poverty, crumbling infrastructure, and a war in the east of the country that has dragged on for over a decade and left over 5.4 million people dead.

Political observers also condemn UK’s silence about the crisis in Congo, stressing when it came to Syria, Libya or Egypt, the media was talking about it every day, but has turned a blind eye to the "Congo massacre".

African critics believe that all killing in Congo will finance Britain and its allies with the minerals, and due to their business in the conflict-hit country they have preferred to keep silence.

Congo is rich in diamonds, oil and minerals including tin, tantalum, tungsten which are widely used by the UK firms for producing mobile phones and laptops. The brutal way through which these materials are exploited, such as mass rape and the massacre of children, has led them to be dubbed as "blood minerals."

Last December, hundreds of Congolese protested outside the Congolese Embassy in London in opposition to the re-election of President Joseph Kabila against long-time opposition leader Etienne Tshisekedi. They also expressed their outrage against the apparent lack of interest from the Western world and media over Congo’s corrupt situation.
