WEST MISSTEP AGAINST IRAN WILL JEOPARDIZE ISRAEL EXISTENCE: IRAN MP

An Iranian lawmaker says the slightest Western military move against Iran will jeopardize Israeli existence.

A senior Iranian lawmaker has warned against any military move against the Islamic Republic, saying even the “slightest of errors” by the West will endanger Israel’s very existence.

“Should the Western countries want to commit the slightest of errors regarding Iran, they will be gripped by such ramifications that will endanger the existence of the Zionist regime,” Alaeddin Boroujerdi said on Thursday

Boroujerdi, who heads the Majlis committee on national security and foreign policy, further cautioned the West to take the warnings seriously as they are neither political in nature nor intended to serve propaganda purposes.

“In case of any venture against our country, the aggressors will face a swift, resolute and serious countermeasure,” the Iranian official said.

The US and Israel have threatened Iran with a military strike, claiming that there is diversion in the country’s nuclear energy program towards a military program.

Earlier this week, Russia reiterated its opposition to a potential aggression against the Islamic Republic, saying such a measure would be baseless and will incur disastrous consequences for the region.

"The CIA and other US officials admit they now have no information about the Iranian leadership taking the political decision to produce nuclear weapons," Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Tuesday.

Iran has repeatedly refuted the Western allegations regarding its nuclear energy program, arguing that as a signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency, it is entitled to develop and acquire nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.

Iranian officials have also promised a crushing response to any military strike against the country, warning that any such measure could result in a war that would spread beyond the Middle East.

IRAN WAR WILL BE WORST MISTAKE IN US HISTORY: FIDEL CASTRO

Cuba’s revolution leader Fidel Castro

Cuba’s revolution leader Fidel Castro has warned Washington against a military attack on Iran, describing such a move as the worst mistake in US history.

In an article titled "The Roads Leading to Disaster," published in the official daily Granma on Thursday, Castro said there is no doubt that the US would be making the greatest mistake in its history if it decides to attack Iran in coordination with Israel.

“The Israeli government has openly declared its intention to attack the enriched uranium production plant in Iran, and the government of the United States has invested hundreds of millions of dollars in manufacturing a bomb for that purpose,” he wrote.

“As far as I am concerned, I do not harbor the slightest doubt that the United States is about to commit, and lead the world toward, the greatest error in its history,” he added.

Castro said Washington is wrong to think that Iranians in the country’s Armed Forces, who are known for their religious principles and fighting traditions, will surrender to the US without shooting a bullet.

In his reflection, Cuba’s revolution leader also defended Tehran’s nuclear energy program and said “Iran does not possess nuclear weapons,” adding that Tehran’s possession of the technology to enrich uranium is not equivalent to the production of nuclear weapons.

Castro also criticized the West’s nuclear double standards, noting that Israel has manufactured nuclear weapons with the help and coordination of the US.

The United States, Israel, and some of their allies accuse Iran of pursuing military objectives in its nuclear energy program, with Washington and Tel Aviv using this pretext to threaten Iran with a military option to stop its nuclear energy program.

Iran rejects allegations of pursuing military objectives in its nuclear energy program, arguing that as a committed signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency, it has the right to use nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.

ISRAELI TROOPS KILLED MORE PALESTINIANS IN 2011: REPORT

An Israeli soldier argues with a Palestinian activist who was prevented from reaching Palestinian lands in the West Bank village of Beit Omar on February 25, 2012.

A human rights group says the number of Palestinians slain by the Israeli military rose dramatically in the past year.

B'Tselem has released a 63-page report showing that a total of 105 Palestinians were killed in Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip while 11 others were killed by Israeli troops in the West Bank and East al-Quds (Jerusalem) in 2011.

"The picture is harsh, not because of dramatic events or a sudden deterioration, but precisely because of the routine," AFP quoted the report as saying.

The group expressed concern that no change is in sight in the Israeli conflict with Palestinians as the Israeli occupation of Palestinian lands enter its 45th year.

"This year, we enter the 45th year since Israel occupied the West Bank and Gaza Strip. What was supposed to be a temporary situation appears firmly entrenched with no change in sight," B'Tselem said.

In 1967, the Israeli regime occupied the West Bank, the Golan Heights, East al-Quds and the Gaza Strip during a war, but it withdrew from Gaza in 2005.

The B'Tselem report said Israel’s prolonged occupation only exacerbates human rights violations.

"Human rights violations are inherent in a military occupation, and the protracted nature of Israel's occupation only exacerbates human rights violations," the report added.

According to B'Tselem, Israeli forces killed a total of 68 Palestinians in 2010.

GERMANY TO SELL ISRAEL NEW NUKE-CAPABLE SUBMARINE

Germany has announced that it will sell Israel a sixth Dolphin-class submarine capable of carrying nuclear warheads with an operating range of 4,500 kilometers (2,800 miles).

German Defense Minister Thomas de Maiziere announced the decision on Tuesday in a joint press conference with his Israeli counterpart Ehud Barak in Berlin.

"A further boat will be delivered to Israel and there will be financial help," said Maiziere, confirming that Germany would shoulder part of the cost of the submarine.

In November, a German government source had said that the country would pay a contribution of 135 million Euros ($178 million), a third of the cost.

Three earlier-model Dolphin submarines had been delivered to Israel between 1998 and 2000.

In 2006, Israel placed its fourth and fifth orders for two more advanced subs.

The fourth one is scheduled for delivery by 2013. The fifth and the sixth orders are due for delivery in 2014 and 2016 respectively.

This is while Israel is the only possessor of nuclear weapons in the Middle East and it has never allowed inspections of its nuclear facilities nor has it joined the Non-Proliferation Treaty based on its policy of nuclear ambiguity.

A survey conducted by the Arab Center for Research and Policy Studies (ACRPS) in twelve Arab countries reveals that 51 percent of the respondents believed Israel to be the first major threat to the Arab world, while 22 percent considered the US.

Another survey conducted in 2011 by the Berlin-based Friedrich Ebert Foundation shows that more than 50 percent of European people believe Israel is the most serious threat to global security.

Germany has recently sold heavy weaponry to autocratic regimes in the Middle East, including 200 Leopard tanks worth billions of dollars to Saudi Arabia, a regime which has helped suppress the popular protests in Bahrain.

ATTACKING IRAN TO HAVE DISASTROUS CONSEQUENCE: RUSSIAN FM LAVROV

Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov

Russian Foreign Minister says a possible attack on Iran over its nuclear energy program will have disastrous consequences as it may lead to an arms race in the region.

"The CIA and other US officials admit they now have no information about the Iranian leadership taking the political decision to produce nuclear weapons," Sergei Lavrov told Moscow's Kommersant FM radio on Tuesday.

"But I am almost certain that such a decision will surely be taken after (any) strikes on Iran," he added, AFP reported.

The pre-recorded interview was aired shortly after Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei warned enemies of Iran that the country is ready to strike back against an attack "at the same level as they attack us."

Lavrov argued that his country is not simply defending an ally, but is trying to avert a broader conflict or possible nuclear arms race from breaking out in the Middle East region.

He added that Israel's threats against Iran were only pushing other nations on poor terms with the West to consider pursuing their own nuclear weapon drives.

Lavrov noted that if a real attack happened, it “…will force a lot of Third World countries to pause and realize that if you have a nuclear bomb, no one will really bother you.”

He particularly raised the case of North Korea and its decision to both develop and test nuclear weapons -- a move that was never followed by a threat of an attack from the United States.

"But we are all behaving responsibly [toward North Korea]. We are not proposing to bomb North Korea. We are all insisting on the immediate resumption of negotiations and looking for ways to make these negotiations productive,” Lavrov said.

"Scientists of almost all nations...agree that strikes against Iran can slow its nuclear program. But do away with it, close it, eliminate it -- never," he added.

The US and Israel have been escalating their war rhetoric against Iran in recent months, claiming that there is diversion in the country’s nuclear energy program towards a military program.

Tehran refutes their claims noting that as a member of International Atomic Energy Agency and signatory to Non-Proliferation Treaty, it has every right to peaceful uses of the nuclear energy.

JORDAN CONDEMNS ‘BARBARIC’ ISRAELI AIRSTRIKES ON GAZA

Relatives of a 12-year-old Palestinian boy killed in Israeli airstrikes grieve during his funeral in the northern Gaza Strip, March 11, 2012.

The Jordanian government has condemned the “barbaric aggression” of the Tel Aviv regime in its latest airstrikes on the impoverished Gaza Strip, leaving scores of Palestinians dead and injured.

Amman government spokesperson Rakan Majali said in a statement issued on Sunday that Jordan “rejects such a barbaric aggression against unarmed Palestinians.”

Eighteen Palestinians, including a 12-year-old boy, have been killed by Israeli airstrikes on the besieged territory since Friday.

At least 35 more Palestinians, including nine children, were injured in the latest round of Israeli aerial attacks against Gaza during the early hours of Monday.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu boasted on Sunday the Tel Aviv regime will continue airstrikes against Gaza “as long as necessary.”

Majali added that the Israeli regime “keeps using its security fears as pretext to kill Palestinians in Gaza. This does not fool anyone anymore.”

Jordan “holds Israel responsible for the outcome of this escalation in Gaza,” according to the Jordanian government statement.

“The Israeli government must immediately stop its attacks on Palestinians,” added the statement.

KRIS HUMPHRIES Demanding $7 Million From KIM KARDASHIAN?

Celebrity gossip websites have learned that KRIS HUMPHRIES is reportedly demanding $7 million from KIM KARDASHIAN in return for walking away from their divorce case.

Early last month, Kris Humphries and his legal team declared that the NBA star was not going to ask Kim for any money… as long as she admits that their marriage was bogus. But since Kim will never admit to such a thing, Kris is now allegedly asking $7 million from his future ex-wife so that they can avoid an ugly divorce trial that’s sure to be highly publicized, which can cause even more damage to Kim’s already precarious public image.

“[Humphries] — through his Minnesota lawyer — has given Kim an ultimatum … either pay up, or endure an ugly, public trial.”

Predictably, Kim and her legal team said “no” due to the fact that they have an iron-clad prenup to back them up, which states that Kim will not have to give a single penny toKris should their marriage fail.

And even if the divorce is turned into an annulment, which is what Kris was pushing for, the money he would be entitled to still won’t amount to $7 million, since his marriage toKim only lasted 72 days.

Could this true, or is it just another smear campaign against Kim’s ex?

COLA GIANTS CHANGE FORMULA TO AVOID CANCER WARNING

Fizzy drink producers including Coca-Cola Co. and PepsiCo Inc. are changing their products’ formulas to avoid using cancer warning labels.

Industry tracker Beverage Digest reported that soda drink companies are changing the way they make the caramel coloring used in their products.

The announcement was issued after a consumer advocacy group released report saying that many popular cola drinks contain a caramel-coloring chemical that causes cancer in lab animals.

The chemical called 4-methylimidazole or 4-MIical 4-methylimidazole is not made of natural caramel but produced via a chemical process which involves ammonia.

Producers of fizzy beverages and some health agencies claim 4-MI has not been proven to be dangerous for humans yet and a consumer would have to drink over a thousand cans of soda a day to reach the doses tied to cancer in rodents.

Public health advocates, however, maintain that the regulator is allowing soft drink companies to needlessly expose millions of Americans to a chemical that is known to cause cancer.

“If companies can make brown food coloring that is carcinogen-free, the industry should use it,” said executive director of Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI), Michael Jacobson.

A California law mandates drinks containing a certain level of carcinogens use warning label and the cola companies said they have already changed their recipes in California and will do the same all across the country soon.

The decision includes Coca-Cola and PepsiCo which account for almost 90 percent of the US soda market.

Coca-Cola, however, said rather than 'changing its recipe' it was simply changing the production process of one of its ingredients.

“The caramel colour in all of our products has been, is and always will be safe, and The Coca-Cola Company is not changing the world-famous formula for our Coca-Cola beverages,” the company said in a statement.

“Over the years, we have updated our manufacturing processes from time to time, but never altered our Secret Formula.”

Monaco's Princess is New Face of Gucci

Charlotte Casiraghi, daughter of Princess Caroline of Monaco, has been named the newest face of Gucci. The 25-year-old equestrian was a ‘natural choice’ for the brand, as she has been wearing the label for riding competitions consecutively.

Charlotte, who is the granddaughter of Grace Kelly, has apparently been wearing riding outfits and designed exclusively for her by the brand’s creative director, Frida Giannini for the past two competitions she took part in. In fact, Giannini has described the young royal as elegant, and as effortlessly defineing contemporary style.

The princess’ fresh-faced beauty and poise, undoubtedly inherited from her mother and grandmother, seems to have led to the brand’s decision to sign her as their face.

This, however, is not Miss Casiraghi’s first stint in the fashion industry. She was photographed for the cover of Vogue Paris in 2011, and has been seen regularly at the front row of shows of major labels like Diane Von Furstenberg, Etam and Yves Saint Laurent.

OXFAM WARNS OF DROUGHT CRISIS IN CENTRAL, WEST AFRICA

The international aid agency, Oxfam, has warned that some 13 million people are on the brink of a full-scale humanitarian crisis in Central and West Africa if an urgent action is not taken to stop the looming catastrophe.

The agency warned on Friday that tens of thousands of people in the Sahel region of Central and West Africa could die in the coming months if the international community did not distribute much-needed aid immediately.

The Sahel belt of Africa, which stretches from Senegal to Eritrea, is particularly sensitive to drought and famine. Some 10 million people were affected by a severe food crisis in the region in 2010.

Oxfam argued that Western governments and aid agencies risked making the mistakes of last year in the Horn of Africa where the famine could have been far less severe had there been a swifter response to the crisis as it developed.

The agency said that malnutrition rates across Chad, Burkina Faso, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, and northern Senegal were hovering between 10 and 15 percent and had risen in some areas beyond the emergency threshold level of 15 percent.

It said that more than one million children in the Sahel region were at risk of severe malnutrition.

In parts of Chad, Oxfam says, some villagers were digging up ant hills to gather grain that the ants have stored.

The agency says that drought, high food prices, severe poverty, and regional conflict were causing the crisis.

Oxfam's regional director in West Africa, Mamadou Biteye, said millions of people were on the threshold of a major crisis. "All signs point to a drought becoming a catastrophe if nothing is done soon," he said.

“The world cannot allow this to happen. A concerted aid effort is needed to stop tens of thousands dying due to international complacency,” the official said. “We witnessed last year the situation spiraling out of control in East Africa as the aid community failed to act swiftly. The worst can be avoided and thousands of lives will be saved if we act now. It's that simple.”

Meanwhile, the hunger season has started early in the Tillabery region in western Niger.

Communities have seen their food stocks dwindle and their debts pile up. Families are migrating to the cities in search for food and jobs and some 33,000 children have dropped out of school, according to government figures, as they follow their parents.

Erratic rains have caused a poor harvest especially in Niger, Chad, Mauritania, Mali, and Burkina Faso.

Added to this, people have had little time to recover from the food crisis of 2010. People have also been hit by an increase in the frequency and severity of the food crises in the Sahel region in the last decade.

In Mauritania, 700,000 people, nearly a quarter of all families, have difficulty meeting their daily food needs. In Chad, 3.5 million people, more than 30 percent of the population, are food insecure. There has also been an increase in the population facing food insecurity in parts of Senegal.

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization, agricultural production in the region is down 25 percent from 2010. The grain harvest is down by 1.4 million metric tons for six Sahel countries. The hardest-hit country is Mauritania, with a 52 percent drop in crop production from last year, while Chad's food production is down by 50 percent and Niger's by 27 percent.

International non-governmental organizations have sounded the alarm that the Sahel could be crippled by food shortages in 2012 as a result of the last year’s poor rains.

KENYAN GOVERNMENT FIRES 25,000 STRIKING HEALTH WORKERS

Kenya’s government has fired 25,000 striking nurses who were protesting against the state’s failure to improve services in public hospitals and increase salaries.

“The names of 25,000 nurses who are on strike have been removed from the pay roll,” government spokesman Alfred Mutua said on Thursday, adding that the country could “no longer sit and watch as Kenyans suffer in hospitals without medical attention because nurses and other medical staff are on strike.”

The strike, which began on March 1, crippled public hospitals across the country. The situation is, however, expected to worsen due to the mass sacking.

Kenyan Medical Services Minister Anyang Nyong on Wednesday warned the nurses of the government’s intention to sack them, in case they did not return to work.

Meanwhile, Mutua announced the government’s willingness to hire new health workers to replace the fired nurses.

“With the sacking of these nurses, we call on qualifies practitioners out there to start applying for these jobs immediately to fill these gaps,” Mutua said.

Largest solar storm in five years to hit Earth on Thursday

The solar storm is a big cloud of charged particles released from a pair of solar flares at about 7.2 million kilometers per hour.

Scientists have announced that the strongest geomagnetic storm in six years will hit Earth's magnetic field on Thursday, which can cause communication problems.

According to the US Space Weather Prediction Center, the storm could affect power grids, airplane routes and space-based satellite navigation systems.

The solar storm, more intense than a similar one in late January, is a big cloud of charged particles released from a pair of solar flares at about 7.2 million kilometers per hour.

The two solar flares first reached Earth late on Tuesday. On Wednesday, the solar radiation hit Earth’s magnetic field with possible impact on air traffic and satellites.

At the last stage, the plasma sent by the coronal mass ejection is expected to arrive at Earth on Thursday, which can disrupt satellites as well as oil pipelines and high-accuracy GPS systems used by oil drillers, surveyors and some agricultural operations.

Solar flares are caused by the sudden release of magnetic energy stored in the Sun's atmosphere, which then releases the charged particles into space in an event called a coronal mass ejection (CME).

Geomagnetic storms can also trigger dramatic aurora displays, which are also known as the northern and southern lights.

After being quiet between 2005 and 2010, the Sun became active in 2011, spouting off numerous powerful flares and CMEs.

Most experts expect such outbursts to continue over the next few years. Solar activity waxes and wanes on an 11-year cycle. Scientists think the current one, which is known as solar Cycle 24, will peak in 2013.

Wikileaks: Bin Laden body was flown To US military mortuary

US President Barack Obama (2nd L) and Vice President Joe Biden (L), along with members of the national security team, receive an update on the mission against Osama bin Laden.

Emails leaked from the US-based global security think tank, Stratfor, obtained by hacker group Anonymous suggest that Osama Bin Laden was not buried at sea but instead flown to US for cremation.

The whistleblower website Wikileaks has released the email belonging to Stratfor vice president for intelligence Fred Burton, in which he says “Reportedly, we took the body with us. Thank goodness.”

“Body bound for Dover, DE on CIA plane. Than (sic) onward to the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology in Bethesda,” a subsequent email on the same day stated.

Burton goes on saying that “If body dumped at sea, which I doubt, the touch is very Adolph Eichman like. The Tribe did the same thing with the Nazi's ashes. We would want to photograph, DNA, fingerprint, etc.”

However, in his last communication on the subject with George Friedman, Stratfor’s chief executive, Burton said “Down and dirty done, He already sleeps with the fish…”

The email is among a trove of five million messages hacked from the firm. Stratfor subscribers include major corporations, military officials and international government agencies. The US weekly business magazine Barron's has likened Stratfor to a "shadow CIA".

Anonymous posted online the names, e-mails and credit card numbers of thousands of Stratfor subscribers, including those of former US secretary of state Kissinger and vice president Dan Quayle.

African unity not beneficial to hegemonic powers: Ahmadinejad

Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad (R) and Malian President’s Special Envoy Alpha Oumar Konare talk during a meeting in the Iranian capital, March 6, 2012.
Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has highlighted the significance of unity among African nations, insisting that a united and powerful Africa will disappoint hegemonic powers.

President Ahmadinejad made the remarks in a Tuesday meeting with visiting Malian President’s Special Envoy Alpha Oumar Konare.

Hegemonic powers seek to revive their colonial domination over the globe in a different form, and they have made a comprehensive plan for such efforts, President Ahmadinejad added.

The envoy, for his part, conveyed the message of Mali President Amadou Toumani Touré to the Iranian president.

He praised Iran’s viewpoints on relations with African countries, in particular during President Ahmadinejad’s presidency.

He said that the union of the African countries and their close cooperation with sovereign states like Iran, which seek a real change in the world, is not to the benefit of hegemonic powers.

The expansion of ties with African countries in political, economic and cultural fields has been among the top priorities of President Ahmadinejad's administration.

Iran President Ahmadinejad says world thirsty for new order

Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad

Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad says the world currently has more thirst than ever before for a new global order, a desire grounded on high human principles and justice.

Iranians are among few nations that have the ability to fulfill such a global and historical desire, said President Ahmadinejad on Tuesday.

He added that the Iranian people have always pursued a universal approach to global developments while they have never sought to impose supremacy over other nations.

The Iranian chief executive emphasized that we are currently at a historical turning point. A new human life era will initiate after the intentional or unintentional passage of the critical milestone.

Ahmadinejad urged the Iranian nation to enhance its unity and make use of its great potentials to transfer its scientific progress to other nations.

UK new visa rules disadvantages workers

The Unite Union has urged the UK government to drop reforms of overseas domestic worker visas, announced by the Home Office, warning that such an act will cause the migrant workers being trapped with abusive employers.

According to a consensus forged across the political parties in 1998, migrant domestic workers could leave their abusive employers without the fear of being deported. But under the new changes in the coalition government policy, domestic workers are expected to suffer in silence because of being fearful of becoming “illegal.”

“These changes will consign migrant domestic workers to a life of abuse at the hands of their employer and force them to suffer in silence with no hope of justice. We do not need to re-learn the lessons that prompted political parties to come together fourteen years ago and protect domestic workers,” said Unite assistant general secretary Diana Holland.

“We urge the government to drop these changes and recognise that turning the clock back will only serve to trap vulnerable workers in abusive employment.”

Unite also expressed its determination to join forces with Justice 4 Domestic Workers, the TUC union, Kalayaan organization, Anti-Slavery International in order to organize a campaign against controversial changes to migrant domestic worker visas.

Meanwhile, a research conducted by the Kalayaan, which provides advice, advocacy and support services in the UK for overseas domestic workers, found that of the 326 people who had registered with them in 2011, 54% experienced psychological abuse, 18% physical and 7% sexual abuse.

Britain admits funding Syria rebels

The UK government has acknowledged that it has provided an extra GBP 2 million to the Western-backed rebels fighting the popular government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Prime Minister David Cameron told a hearing at the House of Commons Liaison Committee on Tuesday afternoon that his government provided cash and equipment to foreign-backed rebels in Syria under such names as ‘aid agencies’ operating on the ground to help deliver emergency medical supplies and food.

The acknowledgement is yet another proof that the rebellion in the Middle Eastern Arab country has its root somewhere in Britain and France, where the governments of Cameron and French president Nicholas Sarkozy built the foundation of a military strike against former Libyan government of dead dictator Muammar Gaddafi.

The two European countries tabled the first draft resolution at the UN Security Council, which called for a no-fly zone over Libya and later it turned out to become an all-out war against a sovereign member of the international community.

The same scenario is being made about Syria, where David Cameron said “Britain would this week, continue to secure a United Nations Security Council resolution demanding an end to the violence and immediate humanitarian access”.

The Prime Minister made three key pledges “to help Syrian citizens, promising more humanitarian assistance, to hold those responsible for slaughter to account and to bring about the political transition that would put a stop to the killing”.

However, Cameron failed to mention the fact that his country’s spying apparatus MI6 was the prime financier of terrorist snipers who kill people from the roofs of the buildings in some cities and towns in Syria.

He also failed to mention another fact that the UK’s former police chief, assistant commissioner John Yates has been deployed to Bahrain, where the ruling family of al-Khalifa regime is brutally killing and torturing people who have come out against corruption and inequality.

John Yates resigned last year from his post at Scotland Yard in the wake of the phone-hacking scandal.

In a show of solidarity with the regime thugs, Yates said that “Bahraini police had faced extraordinary provocation during last year's turmoil”.

Yates described the Bahrainis’ call for free speech and an elected government as vandalism and rioting.

‘US military condones culture of rape’

Female service members in the US military

The US military has been accused of showing a high degree of tolerance for sexual violence and condoning a culture of rape, according to several women who have served in the US armed forces.

Eight current and former female US soldiers filed a lawsuit in US District Court in Washington on Tuesday, alleging that they were raped or sexually harassed while serving in the military.

The women have also claimed in the lawsuit that they faced retaliation when they complained about the abuse.

The lawsuit accuses US military commanders of showing a "high tolerance for sexual predators in their ranks" and failing to take action to tackle the problem.

US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, former defense secretaries Robert Gates and Donald Rumsfeld and former Navy secretaries are among the defendants.

The US Defense Department admitted in January that the number of rape cases in the military is around 19,000 a year.

Israel asks US for bunker-buster bombs, refueling aircraft

US Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta (L) and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met in Washington on Monday, March 5, 2012.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has requested the United States to approve to sell GBU-28 bunker-buster bombs and advanced refueling aircraft to Israel, reports say.

A top US official said on Tuesday that Netanyahu made the request during a Monday meeting with the US Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta in Washington.

The American official said that US President Barack Obama ordered Panetta to work directly with Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak on the issue, indicating that the US government was inclined to approve the request soon.

The US refused to sell bunker-buster bombs and refueling aircraft to Israel during the presidency of George W. Bush, as it estimated that Israel would use them to strike Iran's nuclear energy facilities.

Washington provides Tel Aviv with nearly 3 billion dollars in military aid each year.

On February 27, David Sanger, a prominent American journalist, wrote in the New York Times that the US had provided Israel with the military technology and arms to aid Tel Aviv in a possible attack against Iran’s nuclear facilities aimed at sabotaging its nuclear energy program.

The US and Israel claim Iran is seeking to acquire a military nuclear technology have several times threatened to attack Iran.

Iran has strongly rejected the allegations and argues that, as a signatory to the nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty (NPT) and a member of the IAEA, it has the right to develop and acquire nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.

Police clash with anti-US protesters in Philippines

A police officer (C) tries to evade protesters from the women's group Gabriela during an anti-US protest in front of the US embassy, Manila, March 7, 2012.

Protesters in the Philippines have clashed with police during an anti-US demonstration in the capital Manila against an upcoming joint US-Philippines military exercise.

The scuffles broke out in front of the US embassy on Wednesday.

The protest came shortly after the government announced plans to hold a large-scale military drill with the United States between April 16 and 27.

Approximately 4,500 American soldiers and 2,300 members of the Philippine Armed Forces will participate in the exercise.

A computer-simulated command post exercise, multiple field training exercises, medical, veterinary, engineering humanitarian and civic assistance projects are expected to be put into practice during the military drill.

Ron Paul calls for complete pullout of US forces from Mideast

US Republican presidential hopeful Ron Paul
US Republican presidential hopeful Ron Paul has denounced the US military presence in the Middle East, calling for a full withdrawal of American troops from Iraq and Afghanistan.

Speaking on the so-called Super Tuesday - the second Tuesday in March when voters take part in a 10-state race to choose their party’s presidential candidate, Paul said the current US-led wars and the presence of the US military in the Middle East are in violation of the American Constitution.

Paul, who was speaking to his supporters in North Dakota, added that he would significantly cut the US military budget, with his priority being the US “overseas spending” if elected president.

“Spend the money here at home if you have to but not overseas,” he said.

Paul noted that he would cut overseas spending as the US wars have caused all sorts of problems for Americans, including a skyrocketing national debt for the country.

“Just in these past 10 years, these wars that we're fighting in the Middle East, over 8,500 Americans have died, 44,000 have come back with serious injuries, and amputations and all kinds of problems, hundreds of thousands looking for help because of [the] post-traumatic stress syndrome, at the same time, economically, it's been very damaging. It has added $4 trillion to our national debt,” Paul further said.

He went on to say to his crowd of supporters, “that is what you're inheriting. This is the reason why it is so important, if you're talking about peace and prosperity, you have to change the Constitution and have a lot less war and make a lot more sincere effort to promote the cause of peace.”

The US Republican presidential contender also criticized the US President Barack Obama administration for violating individual liberties through its introduction of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) and the so-called Web Privacy Bill of Rights.

The NDAA which was signed into law by President Obama on New Year’s Eve codifies that US citizens can be detained indefinitely without charge and without trial.

Wikileaks document reveals: US-led NATO troops operate inside Syria

Syrian rebels are seen in the centre of Idlib, northwestern Syria, February 24, 2012.

A document released by the WikiLeaks website has revealed that undercover US-led NATO forces are operating inside Syria against the Syrian government.

WikiLeaks released a confidential email from an analyst working for the US-based intelligence firm Stratfor, in which he claims to have attended a meeting in the Pentagon with several NATO officials from France and Britain in December last year.

The analyst says he learned that US-led NATO troops are already on the ground in Syria, training armed gangs.

"SOF [special operation forces] teams (presumably from the US, UK, France, Jordan and Turkey) are already on the ground, focused on recce [reconnaissance] missions and training opposition forces," the analyst claimed in the letter.

The Stratfor analyst goes on to say that "the idea ‘hypothetically’ is to commit guerrilla attacks, assassination campaigns" to overthrow the Syrian government.

This comes despite claims by the Western military alliance denying the deployment of forces to Syria.

In addition, armed gangs in the country recently said they have received military hardware from France and Britain to attack government forces.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said on Tuesday that the people of Syria are determined to crush terrorist groups and pursue the reforms in the country. He added that foreign forces are seeking to undermine the Syrian government.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since mid-March 2011. Hundreds of people, including security forces have been killed since then.

The United States, Britain and France and countries such as Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkey have supported measures against Assad’s government.

Libya threatens to use 'force' to foil east autonomy bid

Mustafa Abdel Jalil, the leader of Libya's transitional government

The leader of Libya's transitional government, Mustafa Abdel Jalil, has threatened to use force in order to foil autonomy bid for eastern sector of the oil-rich North African country.

“We are not prepared to divide Libya. They should know that there are infiltrators and remnants of Gaddafi's regime trying to exploit them now and we are ready to deter them, even with force,” Abdel Jalil said on Wednesday during a conference in the western city of Misratah.

Abel Jalil’s warning comes as day after a meeting attended by some 3,000 people in the eastern city of Benghazi declared the oil-rich region of Cyrenaica autonomous, raising fears of the country’s breakup following the downfall and killing of former Libyan dictator, Muammar Gaddafi, in October 2011.

"The interim council of Cyrenaica was established under the leadership of Sheikh Ahmed Zubair al-Senussi (an NTC member) to manage the region's affairs and defend the rights of its population," read a statement following the meeting.

Cyrenaica, where the country’s popular revolution against Gaddafi’s four-decade-long rule erupted last year, stretches from the central city of Sirte to the Egyptian border in the east.

It is also one of the three states, Libya was divided into in line with the 1951 constitution adopted under late King Idris.

Abdel Jalil has accused some Arab countries of supporting and financing the tribal leaders, who have declared autonomy in the east of the country.

"Some sister Arab nations unfortunately are supporting and financing this sedition that is happening in the east," Abdel Jalil told reporters at a press conference in the capital Tripoli on Tuesday.

"What is happening today is the start of a conspiracy against the country...This is a very dangerous matter that threatens national unity," he warned.

Jalil, however, did not name the countries alleged to be involved.

Six UK troops killed in south Afghanistan

Six British soldiers have been killed when their armored vehicle was caught in a powerful explosion in the troubled southern Afghanistan.

Britain’s Ministry of Defense said on Wednesday that the soldiers were killed on routine patrol northwest of Durai Junction in Helmand province when their vehicle was struck on Tuesday evening.

All six soldiers were killed, five from 3rd battalion the Yorkshire Regiment and one from 1st Battalion the Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment.

Britain reportedly has around 9,500 soldiers in Afghanistan, making it the second largest force in the country after the United States.

The latest deaths bring to 404 the number of British soldiers killed in war-battered Afghanistan since the US-led invasion of the country in 2001.

The British government has been under pressure to detail its withdrawal strategy but has refused to set out its plans until the United States makes a decision.

Insecurity continues to rise across Afghanistan despite the presence of some 130,000 US-led forces in the Asian country.

The United Nations announced on February 4 that 2011 was the deadliest on record for Afghan civilians. The death toll rose eight percent compared to the year before and was roughly double the figure for 2007.

Overall, 3,021 civilians died in violence related to the war and 4,507 were wounded in 2011. Of the deaths, the UN attributed 77 percent to militant attacks and 14 percent to US-led foreign troops and Afghan forces. Nine percent of the cases were classified as unknown.
