FACEBOOK MORE ADDICTIVE THAN SEX

Facebook and email trump sex in terms of sheer irresistibility, researchers say.

The German study used smartphone-based surveys to probe the daily desires of 205 men and women, most of whom were college age.

For one week the phones, provided by the researchers, buzzed seven times daily, alerting study subjects to take a quick survey on the type, strength and timing of their desires, as well as their ability to resist them.

The study found that while the desire for sex was stronger, the study subjects were more likely to cave into the desire to use media, including email and social networking platforms like Facebook and Twitter.

“Media desires, such as social networking, checking emails, surfing the Web or watching television might be hard to resist in light of the constant availability, huge appeal, and apparent low costs of these activities,” ABC News quoted study author Wilhelm Hofmann from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business as saying.

The urge to check social media was so strong that subjects gave in up to 42 percent of the time.

One explanation is that it’s much more convenient to check email or Facebook than it is to have sex.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF WALKING - WALK ATLEAST 30 MINUTES A DAY

Physical activity does not have to be vigorous or done for long periods in order to improve your health. A 2007 study of inactive women found that even a low level of exercise – around 75 mins per week – improved participants’ fitness levels significantly, when compared to a non-exercising group.

Walking is a suitable physical activity for most people. Regular walking can help you lose body fat, maintain a healthy weight, improve your fitness and reduce your risk of developing conditions such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis and some cancers.

Walking is low impact, requires minimal equipment, can be done at any time of day and can be performed at your own pace. You can get out and walk without worrying about some of the risks associated with other more vigorous forms of exercise. It’s also a great form of physical activity for people who are overweight, elderly or those who haven’t exercised in a long time.

Benefits of walking
You carry your own body weight when you walk. This is sometimes called ‘weight bearing’ exercise. Some of the benefits include:
  • Increased cardiovascular and pulmonary (heart and lung) fitness
  • Reduced risk of heart disease and stroke
  • Improved management of conditions such as hypertension (high blood pressure), high cholesterol, joint and muscular pain or stiffness, and diabetes
  • Stronger bones and improved balance
  • Increased muscle strength and endurance
  • Reduced body fat.
Walk for 30 minutes a day
To get the health benefits, try to walk for at least 30 minutes as briskly as you can most days of the week. ‘Brisk’ means that you can still talk but not sing, and you may be puffing slightly. Moderate activities such as walking pose little health risk but, if you have a medical condition, check with your doctor before starting any new exercise program of physical activity.

Build physical activity into your life
If it’s too difficult to walk for 30 minutes at one time, do regular small bouts (10 minutes) three times per day and gradually build up to longer sessions. If your goal is to lose weight, you will need to do physical activity for longer than 30 minutes each day. You can achieve this by starting with smaller bouts of activity throughout the day and increasing these to sessions of more than 30 minutes as your fitness improves.

Physical activity built into a daily lifestyle plan is also one of the most effective ways to assist with weight loss and keep weight off once it’s lost. Some suggestions to build walking into your daily routine include:

  • Try taking the stairs instead of the lift (for at least part of the way).
  • Get off public transport one stop earlier and walk to work or home.
  • Do housework like vacuuming.
  • Walk (don’t drive) to the local shops.
  • Walk the dog (or your neighbour’s dog).
Walk regularly if you can
Try to make walking a routine – for example, try to walk at the same time each day. Remember, you use the same amount of energy no matter what time of day you walk, so do what is most convenient for you. You may find that asking someone to walk with you will help make it a regular activity. Some people find that keeping an ‘activity diary or log’ also makes it easier.

Wear a pedometer
A pedometer measures the number of steps you take. You can use it to measure your movement throughout a day and compare it to other days or to recommended amounts. This may motivate you to move more. The recommended number of steps accumulated per day to achieve health benefits is 10,000 steps or more.

Set a comfortable intensity
For most people, there is little difference in the amount of energy used by walking a kilometre or running a kilometre – it’s just that walking takes longer. Plan to cover a set distance each day and monitor how long it takes you to walk this distance. As your fitness improves, you will be able to walk a longer distance and use more energy.

Walking fast burns more kilojoules per hour than walking slowly, but this doesn’t mean you have to push yourself until you’re breathless. Instead, pace yourself so that you can still talk. This simple rule of thumb enables you to walk safely within your target heart rate, which brings about health gains.

The body tends to get used to physical activity, so continue to increase your intensity as you are able and thus improve your fitness levels. You can increase the intensity of your walks by:

  • Walking up hills
  • Walking with hand weights
  • Increasing your walking speed gradually by including some quick walking
  • Increasing the distance you walk quickly before returning to a moderate walking pace
  • Walking for longer.
Warming up and cooling down
The best way to warm up is to walk slowly. Start off each walk at a leisurely pace to give your muscles time to warm up, and then pick up the speed. Afterwards, gently stretch your leg muscles – particularly your calves and front and back thighs. Stretches should be held for about 20 seconds. If you feel any pain, ease off the stretch. Don’t bounce or jolt, or you could overstretch muscle tissue and cause microscopic tears, which lead to muscle stiffness and tenderness.

It’s best to dress lightly when you do physical activity. Dressing too warmly can increase sweating and build up body temperature, which can make you uncomfortable during a walk or possibly cause skin irritations. A gradual cool down will also prevent muscular stiffness and injury.

Footwear is important
Walking is a low cost and effective form of exercise. However, the wrong type of shoe or walking action can cause foot or shin pain, blisters and injuries to soft tissue. Make sure your shoes are comfortable, with appropriate heel and arch supports. Take light, easy steps and make sure your heel touches down before your toes. Whenever possible, walk on grass rather than concrete to help absorb the impact.

Make walking a pleasure
Some suggestions to help make regular walking a pleasurable form of physical activity include:
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing.
  • Protect yourself from the sun with clothes, sunglasses, a hat and sun block.
  • Wear waterproof clothing to avoid getting wet if it rains.
  • Drink plenty of fluids before and after your walk. If you are taking a long walk, take water with you.
  • Vary your walking routes so you can enjoy the change in scenery.
  • Walk with a friend and combine physical activity with socialising.
  • Join a local walking club.
  • If you have a medical condition or any health concerns, check with your doctor before you start any type of physical activity program.

Things to remember
Aim to walk for 30 minutes a day or more on most days of the week.
If you can’t manage 30 minutes a day, remember ‘even a little is good, but more is better’.
Movement for health and fitness should be carried out most days of the week.
Plan to cover a set distance each day, regardless of the speed or time taken.

VIDEOS : HURRICANE SANDY - MOTHER NATURE AT WORK

IMPACT OF HURRICANE SANDY

Its arrival, eight days before the U.S. presidential election, forced President Barack Obama and his Republican challenger, Mitt Romney, to alter or cancel several campaign stops. Obama flew back to Washington from Florida, telling reporters at the White House that assets were in place for an effective response to the storm.

"The most important message I have for the public right now is please listen to what your state and local officials are saying," Obama said. "When they tell you to evacuate, you need to evacuate."

Though no longer a hurricane, "post-tropical" superstorm Sandy packed a hurricane-sized punch as it slammed into the Jersey Shore on Monday, killing at least 11 people from West Virginia to North Carolina and Connecticut.

Sandy whipped torrents of water over the streets of Atlantic City, stretching for blocks inland and ripping up part of the vacation spot's fabled boardwalk. The storm surge set records in Lower Manhattan, where flooded substations caused a widespread power outage. It swamped beachfronts on both sides of Long Island Sound and delivered hurricane-force winds from Virginia to Cape Cod as it came ashore.

Sandy's wrath also prompted the evacuation of about 200 patients at NYU Langone Medical Center.

"We are having intermittent telephone access issues, and for this reason the receiving hospital will notify the families of their arrival," spokeswoman Lisa Greiner said.

In addition, the basement of New York's Bellevue Hospital Center flooded, and the hospital was running off of emergency backup power. Ian Michaels of the Office of Emergency Management said the main priority is to help secure additional power and obtain additional fuel and pumps for the hospital.

The storm hit near Atlantic City about 8 p.m. ET, the National Hurricane Center reported. It packed 80-mph winds at landfall, down from the 90 mph clocked earlier Monday.

The storm had already knocked down power lines and tree limbs while still 50 miles offshore and washed out a section of the boardwalk on the north end of town, Atlantic City Mayor Lorenzo Langford told CNN. He said there were still "too many people" who didn't heed instructions to evacuate, and he urged anyone still in town to "hunker down and try to wait this thing out."

"When Mother Nature sends her wrath your way, we're at her mercy, and so all we can do is stay prayerful and do the best that we can," Langford said.

And in Seaside Heights, about 30 miles north of Atlantic City, Police Chief Thomas Boyd told CNN, "The whole north side of my town is totally under water."

Mass transit grinds to a halt

In New York, lower Manhattan's Battery Park recorded nearly 14-foot tide, smashing a record set by 1960's Hurricane Donna by more than 3 feet. The city had already halted service on its bus and train lines, closing schools and ordering about 400,000 people out of their homes in low-lying areas of Manhattan and elsewhere.

Flooding forced the closure of all three of the major airports in the area, LaGuardia, John F. Kennedy and Newark Liberty. Water seeped into subway stations in Lower Manhattan and into the tunnel connecting Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn, while high winds damaged a crane perched atop a Midtown skyscraper under construction, forcing authorities to evacuate the surrounding area.

Superstorm Sandy dumped a lot of rain, flooding a part of Greenpoint, Brooklyn

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg told reporters there was an "extraordinary" amount of water in Lower Manhattan, as well as downed trees throughout the city and widespread power outages.

"We knew that this was going to be a very dangerous storm, and the storm has met our expectations," he said. "The worst of the weather has come, and city certainly is feeling the impacts."

The storm was blamed for more than 2.8 million outages across the Northeast. About 350,000 of them were in the New York city area, where utility provider Con Edison reported it had also cut power to customers in parts of Brooklyn and Lower Manhattan to protect underground equipment as the storm waters rose.

But as water crept into its substations, Con Ed said it had lost service to about 250,000 customers in Manhattan -- including most of the island south of 39th Street.

Five things to know about Sandy.

At least five people had been killed in storm-related incidents in New York state, including three killed by trees falling on homes in Queens and in the town of New Salem, near Albany, city and state officials said. Falling trees were also blamed for three deaths reported in New Jersey and one in Connecticut, authorities there told CNN.

In West Virginia, a woman was killed in a car accident after the storm dumped 5 inches of snow on the town of Davis, said Amy Shuler Goodwin, a spokeswoman for Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin's office.

Waves crash against a previously damaged pier in Atlantic City, New Jersey, as Hurricane Sandy approaches landfall on Monday.

High winds broke part of a crane boom on this building under construction in Manhattan, causing several nearby buildings to be evacuated.

And before hitting land, it overwhelmed the sailing ship HMS Bounty, a replica of the historic British vessel, off North Carolina. Fourteen of the ship's crew of 16 were rescued, but the body of one deckhand was found Monday evening and the ship's captain was still missing Monday night, the Coast Guard said.

Sandy had already claimed at least 67 lives in the Caribbean, including 51 in Haiti.

Sandy's storm surges were boosted by a full moon, which already brings the highest tides of the month. And forecasters said the storm was likely to collide with a cold front and spawn a superstorm that could generate flash floods and snowstorms.

"It could be bad," said U.S. Coast Guard Rear Adm. Steven Rattior, "or it could be devastation."

Mass transit shut down across the densely populated Northeast, landmarks stood empty and schools and government offices were closed. The National Grid, which provides power to millions of customers, said 60 million people could be affected before it's over.

On Fire Island, off Long Island, the water rose above promenades and docks on Monday afternoon, homeowner Karen Boss said. Boss stayed on the island with her husband despite a mandatory evacuation order. She said they own several properties and a business there and had weathered previous storms.

Launch of Dar es Salaam Commuter trains on Monday, 29 October 2012

Transport Minister Dr. Harrison Mwakyembe's arrival before boarding the train.

The first-ever commuter train service in Tanzania's commercial capital, Dar es Salaam, has been launched to ease congestion on roads.

Transport Minister Dr. Harrison Mwakyembe boarded a train, along with passengers, for the maiden journey.

The trains will run on two routes, mostly during peak hour.

Private commuter minibuses, known as "daladalas", are the main mode of transport in Dar es Salaam, one of the world's fastest-growing cities.

It is the first phase of a government scheme to improve the transport network in Dar es Salaam.

                         Happy passengers inside the Train

Dar es Salaam, which has a population of about 2.5 million, says many residents have welcomed the new railway service and hope that it will be expanded.

One track covers a 25km (15.5 miles) journey between Dar es Salaam's Mwakanga and Tazara railway stations and the second track runs for 20km (12.4 miles) between Ubungo-Maziwa and City railway stations.

                                          Train on the way

Trains will operate during the morning and evening - not in the afternoon and late at night.

A one-way ticket costs 400 Tanzanian shillings (about $0.25, £0.15), which compares favourably to daladala fares which range between 500 shillings and 1,000 shillings - depending on the journey.

Most of us are unaware of the splendid health benefits lemon juice offers. From weight loss to managing blood pressure, you can make use of this common sour and fruit to get rid of a lot of ailments. Those who are fond of the sour taste of its juice need not worry about adding anything to it, but the rest may need to make lemonade or have it without sugar.

The benefits of this tart but a juice that is very good for your body are:

Helps in Digestion

Detoxification of Liver

A very effective way of helping the liver produce more bile is having liver juice every morning. It cleanses the liver which helps to break down food easily. Once you drink this juice first thing in the morning, your digestive system is prepared for the whole day’s work. Lemon juice can even break down gallstones as these are composed of calcified bile. The increased production of bile helps in breaking down the gallstones.

Healthy Skin

You can use lemon as an antiseptic and get rid of blackheads and other kinds of acne from your face. Its high antioxidant level not only helps formation of wrinkles but also provides a thorough cleansing of your face. Wrinkles form in the face because of formation of free radicals. If wrinkles do not form, these cells would damage healthy cells of the body. The antioxidants present in the lemon juice destroy these free radicals. So, they prevent the damage to healthy cells as well as formation of acne.

Lemon Juice for Teeth

You can use lemon juice to massage your gums and reduce toothaches. If your gums have any wounds, they can be treated with the massaging. Problems such as foul breath can also be treated with lemon.

WHY PEOPLE CHEAT ON THEIR PARTNERS?

Most people in relationship would agree that commitment means never going astray on sex, and at times even being emotionally intimate to someone else. In a survey done by one of the most popular news channels in USA, it was found that many people admit to being unfaithful at some point of time in their life. It is bemusing that the married lot cheated more than the single.

The reasons for this vary from person to person, but the single factor that is relevant to both the genders is the aversion to commitment.

Some reasons for cheating

  • With the romance coming to an end after marriage, many people cannot reconcile themselves to the mundane life. They want the same attraction back which is not possible in the partner with whom they have spent their last year together.
  • A nagging wife or over passionate husband can make the spouses look for another person to get sanity back into life. That is one of the prime reasons why men and women fall into the arms of a person other than their partner.
  • In case of some persons it is the group tendency that drives them to commit adultery. In case a buddy does it and show it off as something fun, there are many men who cannot resist it. The same goes for women as some friends make their mates cheat just for kicks.
  • In case of men, it is the starvation of sex that leads them to have it outside of wed lock. If the woman is not willing to have sex as much as the man wants or needs it, he is going to look for it elsewhere. In the same way, an unsatisfied woman would look for someone who can satisfy her.
  • The craving for new thrill is one of the most important reasons behind cheating. A man has gratified himself with you, and is not likely to feel the same again. That brings out the urge to experiment, in other words, flirting with other women.
  • If a person is in a state of despair and under great stress, having an affair can fix many problems. It can not only give release from the tension but also work to boost the ego of a person as he or she now feels more desirable. This is usually due to lack of spark or mutual appreciation in a relationship.

7 SECRETS TO A LONG-LASTING MARRIAGE

Nowadays, the term ‘long-lasting marriage’ is an oxymoron. With divorce rates rising, separation has become the easiest solution to tackle any rocky relationship! No wonder, fewer couples are giving their marriage a deserving second chance.

Like any other relationship, even a marriage needs help, every now and then, especially when things get difficult. True, it may be challenging and require more effort on your part but the rewards are worth the extra work. So instead of ignoring and brushing your marital woes under the carpet, make your marriage a happy and long-lasting affair.

The Big C — Communication

If communication is missing in your marriage, before you even realise it, it will slowly destroy your relationship. Everyone talks about honesty in a marriage but that’s only possible if communication lines are open. So even if you’re busy with your work, children, gym, household chores or social activities, just set aside 15 minutes in the day, especially for your spouse. Use this precious time to sit and talk about things — not just about work and family but even anything random.

Dignity and respect

“Love is overrated — it’s respecting your spouse and giving him dignity that will strengthen your bond and help your relationship in the long run,” says Seema Hingorrany, clinical psychologist. You may be married to him and he may be an integral part of your life, but that doesn't mean you own him. It’s important you don’t dominate or boss him around, alone or in front of family and friends. Learn to respect his feelings and decisions, even if you don’t agree.

It’s okay to compromise

Maybe it’s the way we’ve been conditioned, but a lot of people feel that compromise is a sign of weakness and so, are often unwilling to compromise. But considering the vast number of decisions every couple has to make during the course of their lives, you’ll often come across situations, where you will have to find middle ground. That doesn't mean you always have to give up on what you believe or think is right. Make it more about reaching a consensus or solution that both of you will be happy with.

Transparency about finances

Every individual is entitled to financial stability, so it’s completely fine if you have a separate bank account, where you save up money. But it’s equally important that your spouse is aware of your finances too. Whether it’s investing in a new policy or loaning money to a friend or family member, it’s best to keep your husband in the loop. You don’t want this indiscretion to upset him, make him lose his trust on you or unnecessarily create a rift in the relationship.

Bonding with your in-laws

Well, this one is easier said than done, particularly if you aren’t too fond of your spouse’s extended family or vice versa! Still, what matters is that you at least make an attempt to be cordial to them, or engage in polite conversation, whenever you meet. You could also initiate get-togethers or dinners once in a while. After all, if there’s a strain in your relationship with your better half, your in-laws could be a great source of support for both of you.

Don’t let the romance die

As clichéd as it sounds, no matter how many years you’ve been married, keeping the fire embers burning bright is important in your relationship. Give appreciation, attention and quality time to your partner, whenever genuinely possible. Make him feel special. If you have children, send them to their grandparents or the neighbors dress up and go out together on a romantic dinner date. Sometimes, something as simple as holding hands while watching a movie can help rekindle that lost spark!

Understand the concept of ‘giving each other space

Just because you've found someone with whom you can spend the rest of your life, it doesn't mean that you give up your own identity in the process, which often happens with women post marriage. You need to give your relationship some breathing space. Make sure you pursue a hobby or play a sport that does not include your spouse (or children). Constantly being or doing things together can lead to a sort of dependency on each other, which may feel nice temporarily but in the long run, could lead to irritation and frustration.
